Top 5 Qualities of an Amazing House Call Dentist

Find Out What Qualities Make For A Top Notch House Call Dentist

house call dentistThere is a growing need for compassionate, trustworthy in-home dental care within the senior community. As the “Boomer” generation ages, it’s becoming evident that the necessity for house call dentists is undeniable.

With about 20% of Americans over the age 65 having untreated cavities, as reported by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s clear that something needs to be done as far as getting the aging generation proper oral care. They may need a house call dentist. And, finding the right house call dentist in Manhattan can be an intimidating task. Dr. Alisa Kauffman can help!

5 Qualities Your House Call Dentist Must Have

When it comes to finding the perfect Manhattan house call dentist, there are many things to consider. Here are five must-have qualities that you need to look for.

  1. Trustworthiness– Trustworthiness is a huge factor when it comes to inviting someone into your space to care for your loved one. Without trust, it would be virtually impossible to be able to do the necessary treatments. Honesty and trust go a long way in calming even the most apprehensive of patients.

  2. Compassion – Dentists need to be able to be sensitive to patients who are in pain or are scared. Being compassionate will help calm and ease a patient’s fears. Genuine compassion can diffuse stressful situations.

  3. Communication – Communication is vital. Dentists need to be able to educate patients and their caregiver on their diagnosis, treatment, preventative care and maintenance. Being able to explain very technical details in a straightforward way is crucial for the overall health of the patient.

  4. Relational- A dentist needs to be a people person who knows how to calm and put people at ease. Being relational is a must when a dentist is constantly having to work with patients and their caregivers.

  5. Problem-Solving – Problem-solving skills are essential. Especially when working with special needs patients or those with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or other complex health issues. Sometimes a dentist needs to think outside the box in order to figure out the best approach to get their vulnerable patient to cooperate.

Geriatric House Call Dentistry In The Pennsylvania Gazette!

The Pennsylvania Gazette Highlights the Prestige of Dr. Kauffman

What makes someone a pioneer? A pioneer is someone who forges ahead, carving pathways through the wilderness, challenging archaic conventions with innovative insights. Pioneers create order out of chaos and beauty from the mundane. Pioneers revolutionize the way people think and live. Pioneers harbor an unrelenting desire to make a better world and, through perseverance and ingenuity, transform hopes and dreams into reality.

Sometimes pioneers are recognized immediately. Other times, pioneers are not acknowledged until the time for their accolades are long overdue. Fortunately, Dr. Alisa Kauffman is being recognized more and more for being one of the most formidable pioneers in the world of dentistry. Dr. Kauffman’s prestige has become so prescient that the Pennsylvania Gazette has devoted an entire article to chronicle the unique contributions that she is making to the geriatric community of Manhattan through Geriatric House Call Dentistry.

house call dentistry

The Pennsylvania Gazette highlights the unique nature of Dr. Kauffman’s work, which is anything but ordinary. She offers what’s known as “in-home dental services”. While so many dentists have patients pay them a visit, Dr. Kauffman brings her office to her patients. She travels with a portable office because she treats elderly patients, with an average age of 90, who need dental care but are not able to travel to a dental office.

The Gazette chronicles how Dr. Kauffman’s passion for geriatric dentistry was established during her time in dental school. While her classmates were working on the latest cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Kauffman was receiving accolades for designing the best dentures. Little did she know that her desire to make high-quality dentures would play a role in an innovative form of dentistry that drastically improves the lives of the elderly. Dentures can help older adults enjoy all kinds of food and, as a result, continue to experience the joy of a delectable diet.

Dr. Kauffman is not solely driven by the desire to meet basic needs, but also wants to provide the oral care required for older adults to genuinely enjoy things such as flavorful food. She understands that attentive dental care can mean the difference between a bland meal and a delectable feast. Older adults have every right to enjoy the finer things in life, and dental problems should never stand in their way.

The Prestige of Dr. Kauffman’s House Call Dentistry

It’s impossible to ignore the prestige of Dr. Kauffman and her work. She loves meeting fascinating characters, and diligently works to ensure that her clients receive the help that they need. She knows no bounds, pounding the pavement of one of the most bustling cities in the world with a backpack, dental expertise and a mission to change lives through geriatric dental care. Her unrelenting resolve is fueled by an ever-growing passion for her work.

Dr. Kauffman’s business, Geriatric House Call Dentistry, has grown extensively over the years, as she serves a rapidly growing but extremely underserved demographic. Her innovative techniques help her address needs that are often unmet and ignored, and she goes to great lengths to meet the growing demand for her services. Over the years, she has developed a reputation as the house call dentist that Manhattan can trust.

Dr. Kauffman’s techniques are beginning to expand the availability of dental services in multiple areas of the United States. The Pennsylvania Gazette explains that one of Dr. Kauffman’s former students, Steven Lin, has used Dr. Kauffman’s innovative approach to serving secluded communities in Alaska and, as a result, even contribute to culture preservation. By promoting health care and improving oral hygiene, Lin empowers Alaska’s indigenous communities to eat and enjoy their culture’s traditional cuisine.

Years ago, Dr. Kauffman had a brilliant idea: she would travel to the homes of elderly clients instead of requiring them to visit her. Now her idea has not only changed lives in Manhattan but helps meet the needs of isolated populations in Alaska. From the concrete jungle of Manhattan to the Alaskan wilderness, the pioneering spirit of Dr. Alisa Kauffman is trailblazing a path forward for the world of dentistry.

Is Home Dental Care for Seniors Really Necessary?

How House Call Dentistry Can Help Your Aging Loved One

By 2050 the rate of edentulism is projected to slow to a mere 2.6% of the population being edentulous, or without teeth, according to the International & American Associations for Dental Research.  This presents a significant impact on home dental care for seniors.  It directly necessitates more prevalent preventive dental care for elderly.

But why a need for home dental care for seniors?

  • Home-Dental-Care-For-SeniorsSome elderly have difficulty traveling.
Many elderly are confined to a wheelchair, presenting greater difficulties in traveling.  However, the difficulty of wheelchair transportation is not the only challenge facing the aging population.  Some individuals must have oxygen, monitors or IV’s on them at all times.  This also makes travel to and from a dental office challenging.  Take into account those seniors that live in a large metropolis with limited parking, long walks, and crowded public transit systems and the travel becomes ten times harder.
  • Some elderly cannot afford the extensive costs associated with their travel.
Directly related to the previous point, those that need various medical equipment and constant medical attention may find that the cost of traveling to a dental office is actually much higher than the cost of receiving dental care at home.  Some must pay for a nurse to be present at all times during the travel, as well as possible special transportation or equipment.
  • Some elderly are not mentally prepared for the anxiety of a dental visit.
As aging individuals’ experiences become limited to only necessary activities within the home, their emotional grid for handling various experiences becomes limited as well.  Something that would have presented itself as a simple task 20 years ago, suddenly becomes anxiety ridden.  Some elderly even have physiological conditions, such as dementia, that demand no delineation from routine or else severe anxiety and behavioral issues will occur.

Where do you practice – city, counties?

My area is limited to Manhattan and Riverdale.

What led you to the field of Aging Life Care?

Over the years I have worked with many geriatric care managers who have been thoughtful enough to invite me to a lot of their meetings and seminars. I especially loved the full day seminar with Teepa Snow.

Are you a solo practitioner or do you work for a larger organization?

I am a solo practitioner.

Do you have an area of expertise or specialty?

I enjoy working with the elderly in their apartment or home. My colleagues call me the denture queen, but is that really a compliment? In all seriousness, I enjoy fabricating dentures and feel competent working on any type of patient, even those with severe dementia.

What do you hope to gain from your ALCA membership?

I will continue to work closely with many of your members. Most know that I am available 24/7 to help them with any dental issues that arise. I will always try to make room in my schedule to attend the meetings I am invited to.

Is there an aging issue that you are passionate about?

I am passionate that we must find a prevention/slow down of all types of early memory loss. It is a tough issue for everyone to deal with.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

I enjoy mentoring my students in geriatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. And I look forward to the weekends when I can relax and enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter.

How can other members contact you (phone, email. website)?
